The Story of Dhanteras

Once upon a time, there was a king by the name of Hima who used justice and love as his two main instruments of government. He had a kid, and the astrologers said that when the boy was sixteen, a snake bite would take his life. King Hima was filled with intense agony and looked for solutions to keep his son alive. He married a girl with a fortunate horoscope for his son, following the advice of a well-known astrologer. For a short while, the couple had a happy marriage. As the youngster approached his sixteenth birthday, the king began to fear that his son would soon pass away.

The girl came up with a brilliant scheme to save her husband's life on the eve of the boy's sixteenth birthday. After gathering all of her jewelry, she arranged it in front of the front door. She told her husband not to go to sleep and spent the entire night awake herself. She stood watch over the front door while seated close to the house.

Lord Yama, the deity of death, showed up in front of the house as a serpent at the scheduled hour to take the boy's life. The snake made its way to the home's front entrance. The pile of decorations blocked the snake's path as it was ready to enter the door. The snake was unable to see anything properly around it because to the dazzling jewelry. The girl, meantime, continued to sing beautiful melodies all night long. The tunes were so seductive that the snake lingered at the doorway to listen to them. When the boy's time to die ran out, Lord Yama who was formerly a snake had to abandon his purpose.

Why is Dhanteras celebrated in India?

Over the course of five days, Dhanteras is a festival of spiritual victory and the Diwali festivities. Worshipped on this day are the gods of Ayurveda and health, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, and Lord Dhanvantari, who are praised for blessings of prosperity, wealth, and well-being. Hindu mythology states that individuals who pray to Lord Dhanvantari on this festival are said to be freed from all illnesses and pains.

Because of the traditional tale that states that Lord Kubera and Goddess Durga came from the ocean on the day of Dhanteras during the "Sagar Manthan," the two are worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi. Using "Amrit," the Devas and Asuras crossed the sea, with Lord Dhanvantari emerging last during "Sagar Manthan."

Significance of Dhanteras

Two words are combined to form Dhanteras. 'Teras' signifies the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha, while 'Dhan' signifies riches. Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera, Ganesha, and Dhanvantari are worshipped during the puja on this day. The three forms of Goddess Lakshmi that are worshipped during the puja are Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Maha Lakshmi, and Goddess Maha Kaali.
