Rituals of Karva Chauth 2024

Women fast for the entire day on this day, take a bath, have Sargi before sunrise, and get up early. They only break their fast after gazing at the moon, presenting an earthen pot filled with 'arghya' to it, and tasting food and drink from their husbands' hands.

Because it is considered auspicious, women dress traditionally, wearing traditional married lady symbols (such as sindoor, bindis, and bangles), and apply henna to their hands during the Karwa Chauth Puja. A lot of people also read aloud in groups the tale of Karwa Chauth and perform songs. Most ladies, particularly those from Punjab, also get sargi from their mother-in-law.

Sandhya time, which begins after sunset, is the ideal time to perform Karwa Chauth Puja, according to Vratraj. Therefore, after the location for your city has been determined, kindly record the city-specific Karwa Chauth Puja Timings.

The main goal of Karwa Chauth Puja is to ask Goddess Parvati for her favor. To worship Mata Parvati, women can draw Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata on the wall or use the image of Chauth Mata on the printed Karwa Chauth Puja Calendar. Goddess Parvati is represented by Goddess Gaura and Chauth Mata. Typically, women gather in groups to perform Puja and recite the story of Karwa Chauth Mahatamya, also referred to as the generous Karwa Chauth fasting.

Karwa should be donated as charity to a Brahmin or deserving woman after Puja. Precious stones or money should be dropped into the Karwa or Karak after it has been filled with water or milk. Donating Karwa to Brahmin or Suhagan women is a good idea.

The Story of Karva Chauth

Karwa Devi, whose husband was attacked by a crocodile, and Savitri, who pleaded with the god of death, Yama, to return their spouse's soul, are the sources of Karwa Chauth. According to a different narrative, Draupadi became concerned when Arjun traveled to the Nilgiris to meditate and requested Krishna for assistance to make sure he was safe.

According to legend, Krishna told her to fast for Arjun in the same way that Parvati fasted for her husband, Shiva. However, Drik Panchang claims that the legend of Karwa Chauth is connected to Veeravati, who had a strong love for her spouse. According to Drik Panchang, Veeravati had seven brothers who lavished her with kindness. One day, while Veeravati was visiting her home, she made the decision to keep a nirjala vrat for her husband, but she was too weak to withstand the hunger and passed out.

When her brothers saw her like this, they begged her to eat, but Veeravati stated she was waiting for the moon to rise, ignoring their pleas. After learning this, the brothers made the plan to mislead Veerawati into believing the moon was out and breaking her fast by climbing a peepal tree and holding a flame behind a sieve.

Regretfully, her husband passed away the instant she broke the fast without seeing the moon. She was devastated by the news and couldn't cope until Indrani, Indra's wife, came to comfort her. She was told to observe a fast every month of the year in order for her husband to return from the dead.

At last, her hard work paid off, and her husband returned at the end of it. As a result, married Hindu women fast on Karwa Chauth and offer prayers to Shiva, Parvati, Ganesha, and Karwa Mata in hopes of extending their husbands' lives.

Married Hindu women fast on this day, without eating or drinking anything after sunrise for the entire day. This practice is known as "nirjala vrat." The northern regions of India, which include Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, are major celebrators of the one-day event. Hindu married ladies offer prayers to Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Karwa Mata for their husbands to have long lives.
