Temple Details
Kamakhya Temple, Kamarupa-Kamakhya is also a Hindu temple dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya. This temple is located in Kamachha, Varanasi. This temple is quite popular in Varanasi. The story goes that Lord Shiva was on Mandarachal and Kashi was ruled by a very pious and religious king named Divodas. Everyone in his kingdom was very happy and there was prosperity all around. He had made an agreement with Lord Brahma that as long as he is ruling, the gods and other divine beings should stay away from Kashi and not create any disturbance in Kashi. Lord Brahma more or less agreed to this but on one condition that King Divodas should prove to be an excellent administrator and all the people living in Kashi and visiting Kashi should be treated well in their religious activities. The king agreed and gave excellent rule accordingly. Lord Shiva was very sad due to being away from Kashi for a long time and he wanted to make King Divodas do some wrong. Accordingly, he sent sixty-four yoginis to cause some disturbance, but they were mesmerized by the beauty and serene atmosphere of Kashi, which appeared to be a part of heaven. They eventually settled in Kashi and established themselves in various places around the region. Kamakhya Devi (Kamakshi Devi) was one of them.
